Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA): Year 1 Implementation

Description:

This 2024–2025 program evaluation examined the first year of systemwide implementation for Amplify’s Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum across MCPS elementary schools. The purpose of this evaluation was to assess the extent to which the curriculum was implemented as intended and to identify areas for strengthening curriculum implementation and professional learning. This evaluation used a mixed-methods approach to assess the extent of implementation and stakeholder experiences. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through classroom observations in Kindergarten and Grade 3 classes across 40 schools, a review of English Language Arts (ELA) schedules from the same schools, and online staff surveys. Survey participants included district-wide Kindergarten through Grade 5 general education and special education classroom teachers and school reading specialists.

Recommendations:

Ongoing discussions and focused attention are needed to strengthen curriculum implementation and support the success of all teachers and students. This was the first school year of districtwide CKLA implementation, a phase often marked by growing pains and a need for refinement. The following recommendations aim to enhance implementation: 1. Schedule and adhere to 120 minutes of ELA instruction in Kindergarten through Grade 3; 2. Continue and strengthen targeted professional learning, support, and resources to address staff concerns; and 3. Re-evaluate assessment volume, alignment, and processes.
