Middle School Mathematics Classroom Observation and Teacher Interview Analysis, Sept. 2000


As a result of performance differences on Algebra 1 final examinations by school during the 1999-2000 school year, questions have arisen regarding whether all students are sufficiently prepared to handle algebraic content by grade 8 or 9, and whether teachers have different expectations for students based on demographic variables or the students prior mathematics performance. This report provides data obtained from the classroom observations and from teachers comments to help shed light on the questions surrounding Algebra 1 performance.
