Overall, 76 percent of last year's Grade 9 students successfully completed Algebra 1 or higher-level mathematics, representing approximately 9,250 students. This includes gains by African American and Hispanic students. Additionally, 48 percent of Grade 8 students successfully completed Algebra 1 or higher-level mathematics, representing approximately 5,100 students. Compared with the prior year, the completion rates rose for Grades 6, 7, and 9, while the completion rate for Grade 8 students declined less than one percent. Nonetheless, there were small but important gains by African American and Hispanic students in Grade 8. Compared with the prior year, the Grade 8 Geometry or higher-level mathematics completion rates rose for all groups of students. For Grades 9 and 10 students, the completion rates remained stable.
