This study identified characteristics of middle schools with sustained success in narrowing the achievement gap between Asian American and White students and African American and Hispanic students. Members of the teaching staff at each middle school completed an online survey about a variety of school-level policies, strategies, and practices. The significant differences on survey items between middle schools that closed the gap and the remaining middle schools suggested three characteristic themes: school leadership for learning, teaching, and equity; teacher support for use of data; and school culture.
