Nancy Navarro Elected to Fill District 5 Seat

Nancy Navarro has been elected by the Board of Education to fill the District 5 seat vacated by Dr. Henry Lee on October 12, 2004. Ms. Navarro was elected on the first ballot by a vote of four to three to fill the term ending in 2006.

The interview of four finalists selected by the Board and the election occurred during a public meeting of the Board on Saturday, November 20, at the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville.

Ms. Navarro is the co-founder and currently co-executive director of Centro Familia, a non-profit community based organization whose mission is to assist the economic and educational development of Latino and other immigrant communities. School readiness, healthy family development, and academic achievement are primary goals of the organization.

Ms. Navarro has served in a number of volunteer leadership roles, including co-president of the White Oak Middle School PTSA (2004-2005) and co-chair of the Long Branch Revitalization Task Force (2004-present). She also is an active bilingual classroom parent volunteer at Rock Creek Forest Elementary School. She is the recipient of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Montgomery County Leadership Award and the Maryland State Department of Education “Women Who Dare” Leadership Award, among other recognitions.

Ms. Navarro is at 1987 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia. She and her husband have two daughters who attend the Montgomery County Public Schools.
