Kingsview MS to Host National EPA Green Day
April 25, 2005
Kingsview Middle School has been selected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to host a special day of activities and learning designed to help raise student awareness of the need for resource conservation and waste reduction. “It's a Green Day at Kingsview” will be held on Thursday, April 28, beginning with an opening ceremony at 8:20 a.m. and ending with a closing ceremony at 2:15 p.m.
Throughout the day, more than 400 eighth grade students will have the opportunity to select from among a long list of activities in four environmental theme areas: Art, Greenscapes, Reduce/Reuse/Recycle, and Educational Workshops. The hands-on activities will focus on areas such as reducing waste, reusing materials, recycling, and conserving natural resources and energy. Numerous county groups and government agencies will lend their expertise by leading activities such as stream monitoring, tree planting, vermiculture, storm drain marking, and nature/trash pickup hikes. Art-oriented activities include making sculptures from trash, building bluebird houses, and making birdseed cakes.
Green Day was created by the EPA to raise student awareness of how everyday actions affect the environment, to promote careers in environmental sciences, and to encourage environmental stewardship. Kingsview Middle School is the second school in the nation to be selected as a host sight for the EPA's national environmental awareness campaign for students.
