Board Appoints Citizens Advisory Committee on
Family Life and Human Development


The Board of Education met on Monday (October 24) and, among other items, approved a legislative platform for the 2006 session of the Maryland General Assembly and approved appointments to the Citizens Advisory Committee on Family Life and Human Development.

The Board also tentatively approved two policies and presented a list of four names for the Clarksburg Area High School for consideration by the naming committee. The Board also recognized the Maryland Teacher of the Year and welcomed members of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Class of 1959.

Legislative Platform

The Board approved a legislative platform for the 2006 session of the Maryland General Assembly. The platform summarizes Board positions on priority issues without precluding the consideration of additional legislative and budget issues during the legislative session. The Board also approved a resolution supporting a $400 million state funding level for FY 2007 to address school facilities needs identified in the 2004 Public School Facilities Act.

Appointments to the Citizens Advisory Committee on Family Life and Human Development

The Board of Education voted Monday night to appoint 14 Montgomery County residents to serve on the new Citizens Advisory Committee on Family Life and Human Development. More than 180 people applied to serve on the committee, which will advise the school system as it develops its new health education curriculum in the coming months.

Tentative Action on Policy IQD, Academic Eligibility for Extracurricular Activities

The Board tentatively approved revised Policy IQD, Academic Eligibility for Extracurricular Activities, articulating the Board's commitment to providing an array of extracurricular opportunities for students and emphasizing the necessity of having both extracurricular activities requiring academic eligibility and those predicated on open enrollment. The revised policy will now be sent out for public comment.

Tentative Action on Policy JEB, Early Entrance into Kindergarten

The Board tentatively approved revised Policy JEB, Early Entrance to Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, and First Grade, formerly called Early Entrance to First Grade. The scope of the policy has been broadened to include early admission to prekindergarten and kindergarten as well as first grade, and the name of the policy has been changed accordingly. The revised policy will now be sent out for public comment.

Names for the New Clarksburg Area High School

The Board submitted a list of four names to the principal of Clarksburg Area High School for consideration by the school naming committee. The names for consideration are John G. Clark, Clarksburg, Sandra Day O'Connor, and Wilson Wims. The committee will make its recommendation to the Board, which will make the final selection of the name for the new high school.

Recognition of Maryland Teacher of the Year

The Board issued a declaration recognizing the accomplishments of the Maryland Teacher of the Year for 2005, Kimberly Oliver, kindergarten teacher at Broad Acres Elementary School.

Presentation of Plaque to Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School

The Board welcomed members of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Class of 1959, who presented the principal of the school with a plaque commemorating a speech to the class made by then-Senator John F. Kennedy.
