Edward Nolan Wins Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

Edward Nolan, a math resource teacher at Albert Einstein High School, has won the 2005 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The Presidential Awards are the nation’s highest honor for teachers of mathematics and science from kindergarten through grade 12.

Nolan was named a finalist last fall, and selected for the Presidential Award, for his work last school year at Julius West Middle School, where he was math department chair and taught Math C and Honors Geometry, and for his overall accomplishments at the state and national level. Nolan was president of the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics from 2003-2005 and on the committee that writes activities for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, among his many accomplishments.

Nolan was among 100 Presidential Award winners throughout the nation participating this week in activities in Washington, D.C., including visits to the White House, U.S. Capitol, and National Academy of Sciences, and dinner at the U.S. Department of State. The Presidential Award winners were honored today at an awards ceremony and received a citation signed by President George W. Bush. The winners also receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF), which administers the program with assistance from the National Science Teachers Association and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

This is Nolan’s 16th year with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). He has taught math at Gaithersburg Intermediate School, Eastern Middle School, Robert Frost Middle School, and Julius West Middle School, and has served as program supervisor of mathematics at MCPS. He is finishing up his first year at Einstein, where he is a resource teacher, head of the math department, and algebra lead teacher.
