Ice Cream and Kudos Featured at Highland ES
August 22, 2006
Students Make Significant Gains on Maryland School Assessment;
School Exits Corrective Action List
The significant gains made by students at Highland Elementary School in reaching Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on the Maryland School Assessment for the second consecutive year will be celebrated at a press conference and open house on Friday, August 25, at 2:00 p.m. at the school. Superintendent Jerry D. Weast and members of the Board of Education will hand out ice cream, along with congratulations to students, families, and staff.
The performance of the students at Highland means that the school has been removed from the state’s corrective action list under the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act. Seventy-four percent of Highland’s students are Hispanic and nearly 57 percent qualify for the subsidized meal program. A number of strategies were used by the administration and staff at the school to provide students with the focused instruction and support that helped them achieve at a higher level.
There currently are no federally funded Title I schools in MCPS that are identified for school improvement, corrective action, or restructuring.
