Students to Participate in Hispanic Caucus
September 29, 2006
The Montgomery County Business Roundtable for Education (MCBRE) and Congressman Christopher Van Hollen are joining together to sponsor an opportunity for high school students to participate in the Student Emerging Leaders Program at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 2006 Public Policy Conference. Students will participate in this two-day program on October 2 and October 3, 2006, in Washington, D.C.
This program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to interact with Hispanic legislative leaders and discuss important issues. Fifty-two high school juniors who demonstrated an interest in national, state and local government were chosen to participate in the program by their high school principals.
As part of the program, students will be responsible for selecting among a number of topics that will be presented by congressional legislators at the conference. After the conference, students will present a research paper on the selected topic. In addition, students will attend an opening meeting and sessions specially designed for them.
The Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia will provide lawyers to mentor and guide students as they participate in the discussion sessions.
Later in the fall, students, mentors, and leaders from MCBRE and Montgomery County Public Schools will attend a reception with Congressman Van Hollen and Congressman Albert Wynn.
For more information, contact Jane Kubasik, executive director of MCBRE at 301-279-3100, or Caroline Kursman, program coordinator, at 301-279-7029.
