Students To Attend World Affairs Conference
February 1, 2007
Fourteen High School Students To Attend National Conference of the World Affairs Councils of America
Fourteen high school students who have participated this year in the Superintendent’s Leadership Program (SLP), an honors course for a select group of high school seniors, have been invited to attend the national conference of the World Affairs Councils of America on February 2 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C. The topic of the conference is “Bridging the Desert: The Middle East in the Next Decade.” Students will have an opportunity to attend panel discussions and workshops. More information about the conference is available at the link below.
The conference is one of many opportunities that have been provided to SLP students this year. The honors course is a program for high-achieving students who want the opportunity to participate in leadership training and executive-level work experience. Students function as a member of a professional team in a local place of business by serving as an executive intern. The internship allows the student to apply leadership skills and learn from real-world experiences. The students meet periodically with Superintendent Jerry D. Weast to analyze and discuss their intern experiences.
Students may apply for the SLP by accessing the online application form on the school system Web site.
Qualifications include:
· 16th birthday by July 1 of application year
· senior by July 1 of application year
· minimum GPA of 3.5
· completed graduation requirements with the exception of English and Mathematics
· demonstrated leadership ability in school or the community
· two letters of recommendation
Students must apply for next year’s program by March 15, 2007. For more information, contact Program Coordinator Kim Jones at 301-279-3546.
