Ashburton ES Leads Walk to School Day

October 2, 2007
County and state officials will join students and parents to celebrate this year’s Walk to School Day at Ashburton Elementary School on Wednesday, October 3, beginning with a walk to the school from Davis Library in Bethesda at 8:10 a.m.

A press conference in front of the school will follow, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Speakers are expected to include:

County Executive Isaiah Leggett; State Transportation Secretary John Porcari; Board of Education Member Judy Docca; County Councilmembers Roger Berliner, George Leventhal, and Nancy Floreen; Maryland State Delegates William Bronrott and William Frick; Montgomery County Fire Chief Tom Carr; Montgomery County Police Captain Russell Hamill; Ashburton Elementary School Principal Charlene Eroh; Ashburton Elementary School Safety Patrol Captain Ryan Garfinkel; and other safety patrol students.

Participants will walk from Davis Library to the school in order to bring attention to the need to help children and adults become more physically active. Other goals of Walk to School Day are to emphasize the importance of safe neighborhoods for children and adults to walk in; reduce traffic in neighborhoods, especially around schools; prevent crime through increased neighborhood vigilance; and help neighbors get to know one another.

Nearly 30 schools throughout Montgomery County have planned special activities to mark Walk to School Day.
