Board Meeting Summary: Board Approves Appointment of New Deputy Superintendent, Endorses Final Report of Honors/AP Work Group and Discusses Safety and Security Report

The Board of Education met yesterday [Tuesday, July 13] and, among other items, approved four administrative appointments, including the appointment of a new deputy superintendent of schools. The Board also voted to endorse the report of the work group on honors/advanced placement policies, practices and enrollment and reviewed the report of the National Alliance for Safe Schools on safety and security. In addition, the Board approved a recommended price increase in the Food Services Program.

Personnel Appointments

The Board approved the following four administrative appointments:

  • Dr. Steven G. Seleznow, currently associate superintendent, Office of School Administration, as deputy superintendent of schools.

  • Barbara A. Simmons, currently principal of the Maryland State Regional Alternative School in Prince George's County, as coordinator, Alternative Programs.

  • Helen M. Smith, currently resource teacher, Quince Orchard High School, as coordinator, Secondary Art, Theatre, and Dance, Division of Aesthetic, Health and Physical Education.

  • Donna K. Watson, acting supervisor, Special Education Services, as supervisor of Special Education Services.

    Honors/AP Workgroup Report

    The Board voted unanimously to endorse the final report of the work group on honors/advanced placement policies, practices and enrollment and resolved to communicate its commitment to high expectations for all students to staff, students, parents and the community and to schedule a Board retreat with members of the work group to discuss the recommendations and implementation plans. The work group was appointed in September 1997 to review all relevant information, procedures and practices regarding honors and advanced placement courses in high schools. Eight major recommendations and initial plans for addressing problem issues are identified in the report.

    Report on Safety and Security

    The Board discussed the report on school safety and security prepared by the National Alliance for Safe Schools. The external review examined school-based security procedures, staffing, and training, in addition to school-based perceptions of security issues, a review of security data, an assessment of prevention programs, an inventory of security devices, and a review of access control to buildings and facilities. The review also focused on central office organization, procedures and training.

    Food Services Program

    The Board approved a recommendation to increase the price of the Food Services Program by three percent in order to address a six-percent increase in costs for food and supplies. Beginning on September 1, 1999, the price of lunch for elementary students will increase from $1.50 to $1.55. Lunch for secondary students will increase from $1.60 to $1.65. Adult lunches will increase from $2.45 to $2.55. Elementary and secondary school breakfast will increase from $.80 to $1.00.
