Two Students are Among the National Medal Winners in the NAACP's ACT-SO Competition

Two students from Watkins Mill and Springbrook high schools are among 10 Maryland students who received top national honors in the 22nd annual Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO). The competition was held in July in New York City.

The Montgomery County Public Schools winners, their schools, and their areas of competition are:

  • Karl Kuhn, Watkins Mill High School, gold medal for music composition; and

  • Michelle Agostini, Springbrook High School, bronze medal for playwriting.

    The ACT-SO program allows African American high school students to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities in a variety of academic and creative disciplines. This year, more than 800 students competed in the national competition for bronze, silver, and gold medals in 12 categories that included the sciences, humanities, and the performing and visual arts.
