Board of Education Approves Updated Strategic Plan

The Board of Education met on Monday (June 27) and, among other items, approved an update of the strategic plan. In addition, the Board made four administrative appointments and recognized MCPS-University partnerships and scholarship recipients from the Asian American Education Association. The Board also approved a settlement of the health education curriculum lawsuit (See separate story at www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org.)

Strategic Plan-Our Call to Action: Pursuit of Excellence

The Board approved revision to Our Call to Action: Pursuit of Excellence, the strategic plan for Montgomery County Public Schools. The revisions will guide the work of schools and offices for the next three years. The plan reinforces the initiatives that have been implemented since the Board adopted Our Call to Action in November 1999.

Appointments

The Board approved the following administrative appointments:

Sherry L. Liebes, currently principal, College Gardens Elementary School, as director of school performance, Office of School Performance

Paula L. Howland, currently supervisor, Nonpublic Office, Department of Special Education, Prince GeorgeGeorge’s County Public Schools, as supervisor, Placement and Assessment Services Unit, Office of Special Education and Student Services

Debra S. Munk, currently principal, Middletown High School, Middletown, Maryland, as principal, Rockville High School

Eileen Macfarlane, currently principal, Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary School, as principal, Ronald McNair Elementary School

Recognition of MCPS–University Partnerships

The Board recognized individuals representing partnership programs with area universities and colleges that grant advanced degrees to MCPS employees.

Recognition of the Asian American Education Association Scholarship Recipients

The Board recognized the two recipients of this year’s Asian American Education Association scholarship awards. The winners of a $1,000 scholarship each are Ran Cho and Huang Xuan Ho. Each student has expressed a commitment to becoming an educator.

Settlement Agreement on Health Education Curriculum

The Board approved a settlement agreement that resolves a federal lawsuit over revisions to the health education curriculum and achieved the Board's goal of ending the dispute on mutually agreeable terms without compromising its authority over curriculum content.
