Eight Students Are Intel Science Search Semifinalists
January 18, 2008
Eight Montgomery County Public Schools students have been named semifinalists in the 67th Intel Science Talent Search, one of the most rigorous and prestigious science competitions for high school students in the United States. This brings the total of Intel semifinalists in MCPS to 125 since the 1999–2000 school year.
Five of the students attend the Math, Science, Computer Science Magnet Program at Montgomery Blair High School. Montgomery Blair High School students’ performance in this competition continues to place the school among the top ten high schools nationally. Walt Whitman High School had two semifinalists, and Richard Montgomery High School had one.
The semifinalists are:
Montgomery Blair High School: Andrew Kung, Benjamin Lee, Timothy Peng, Jasleen Salwan, and Louis Wasserman
Richard Montgomery High School: Benjamin Lu
Walt Whitman High School: Anushka Aqil and Paul Kominers
Eight of Maryland’s nine semifinalists are from MCPS. Three hundred seniors from 194 high schools throughout the nation were named semifinalists. On January 30, 40 of the semifinalists will be named finalists and will attend a weeklong institute in Washington, D.C., in March where the top award winners will be announced.
The program is administered by Society for Science and the Public (formerly named Science Service), a nonprofit organization dedicated to research and education.
