Seven students have been named winners in the National Achievement Scholarship Program for outstanding African American students.

The awardees were selected from students nationwide who requested consideration when they took the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as high school juniors. The program is financed and conducted annually by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The winners in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) are among about 700 students nationwide chosen for $2,500 scholarships. Another 100 students were awarded corporate scholarships.

MCPS winners and their intended career fields are:

Montgomery Blair High School: Malcolm Foley, business; Betsir Zemen, psychiatry

Col. Zadok Magruder High School: Melinda Paul, emergency medicine

John F. Kennedy High School: Zuri Sullivan, biomedical research

Paint Branch High School: Sanata Sy-Sahande, foreign service

Poolesville High School: Kobena Waters, medicine

Walt Whitman High School: Justin Krumm, medicine
