One hundred educators in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) achieved certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in 2008. The educators come from both elementary and secondary schools throughout the county and represent more than 60 among the 200 MCPS schools, as well as the Infants and Toddlers Program and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

MCPS continues to lead the state in the number of educators awarded this prestigious recognition of their proficiency. With the new 100, a total of 478 MCPS educators have achieved National Board Certification while teaching in MCPS; 455 of those are currently active MCPS employees.

National Board Certification was created so that educators, like professionals in other fields, can achieve distinction by demonstrating that they meet high standards. To achieve certification, candidates must complete a serious of rigorous assessments that include teaching portfolios, student work samples, videotapes and analyses of their classroom teaching and student learning. Candidates also complete a series of written exercises on their subject-matter knowledge and their understanding of how to teach those subjects to their students.
