Fifteen Additional Students Win National Merit Scholarships

Fifteen students have been named in the first round of college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. The students are among 35 winners in Maryland of scholarships sponsored by colleges and universities throughout the nation. Each sponsor college selected scholarship winners from among finalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

So far this year, 42 students in Montgomery County Public Schools have been named Merit Scholars. Another group of college-sponsored Merit Scholars will be announced in July.

The winners, their intended career fields and scholarship sponsors are:

· Montgomery Blair High School: Jeremy E. Fallick, University of Maryland, computer science; Timothy C. Lee, University of Maryland, electrical engineering; Scott A. Zimmermann, University of Maryland, computer science; Victoria Lai, University of Maryland, computer science/law; Andrea Y. Ng, University of Maryland, computer science; Elaine Lin, University of Maryland, mechanical engineering; Meredith H. Metcalf, Emory University, entertainment; Joseph R. Owen, University of Maryland, computer science

· Winston Churchill High School: Brett G. Mead, Washington University in St. Louis, law; Brian C. Sun, University of Maryland, theater/performing arts

· Walter Johnson High School: Jane C. Hillenbrand, University of Rochester, physical science; Spencer K. Ollayos, University of Maryland, medicine

· Richard Montgomery High School: Andrew I. Yu, University of Maryland, engineering

· Seneca Valley High School: Joseph R. Burns, Georgia Institute of Technology, nuclear engineering

· Thomas S. Wootton High School: Hubert M. Shiau, University of Maryland, accounting/information systems
