MCPS Back-to-School Fair Set for Saturday, August 24

August 15, 2013
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will kick off the 2013-2014 school year with its annual Back-to-School Fair on Saturday, August 24, 2013, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Drive, in Rockville.

This free event, coordinated by the Office of Community Engagement and Partnerships, will feature something for everyone—from information and resources for parents, to children’s activities and entertainment for all.

Highlights of the day will include student and community performance groups, appearances by local celebrities and health screenings. MCPS staff members will be available to answer questions and provide information about a variety of topics, including consortia and magnet programs, classroom instruction and much more.

Parents also will have the opportunity to learn more about Curriculum 2.0, the district’s improved curriculum for the elementary grades that is being implemented in all kindergarten through Grade 5 classrooms this year. At the fair, students will get to experience Curriculum 2.0 firsthand through a series of hands-on activities that are aligned to the curriculum in science, fine arts, physical education, and other content areas.

Representatives from community and county organizations also will be present, including the Department of Health and Human Services, Montgomery College, Montgomery County Public Libraries, and the Montgomery County Council of PTAs. Gift certificates and prizes will be given out throughout the day and free refreshments will be provided.

One change this year is that backpacks, filled with school supplies, will not be distributed at the fair. Instead, backpacks are being distributed to students in need at more than 40 MCPS schools.

The Back-to-School Fair is made possible through generous donations from sponsors including Kaiser Permanente, Washington Talent Agency, Montgomery College and Party Plus.

Limited parking will be available at Montgomery College across the street from the Carver Educational Services Center. Free round-trip shuttle buses will run throughout the day, starting at 10:30 a.m., between the fair and the following sites:

  -Shady Grove Middle School
  -Montgomery Blair High School
