Superintendent’s Community Outreach Events Set for the 2013-2014 School Year

Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr will kick off this school year’s community outreach events next week with a Community Day on Monday, October 14, and a Student Town Hall on Thursday, October 17.

Throughout the 2013-2014 school year, Dr. Starr will hold several events to engage the students, staff and community of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

“Staying connected with our staff, students and community members is one of the most important aspects of my job,” Dr. Starr said. “These events are a great way to hear directly from our stakeholders on what we are doing well and how we can continue to improve.”

Community Days

Dr. Starr will hold four Community Days, during which he will spend the day in different areas of the county, meeting with staff, visiting schools, and hearing from parents. Each Community Day will culminate with a Town Hall event at 7:30 p.m., where the public can ask questions and share thoughts and ideas. Free childcare and interpretation services will be available at the Town Hall meetings.

The first Community Day is set for Monday, October 14, and includes schools in the Clarksburg, Poolesville, Damascus, Gaithersburg, Seneca Valley, Watkins Mill, Northwest and Quince Orchard clusters. The Town Hall meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Clarksburg High School, 22500 Wims Road in Clarksburg.

The dates and Town Hall locations for the three other Community Days are:

-Thursday, November 21: Downcounty Consortium (Montgomery Blair, Albert Einstein, John F. Kennedy, Northwood and Wheaton clusters); Town Hall at Montgomery Blair High School

-Monday, February 3, 2014: Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Winston Churchill, Richard Montgomery, Rockville, Walter Johnson, Walt Whitman and Thomas S. Wootton clusters; Town Hall at Winston Churchill High School

-Monday, April 28, 2014: Northeast Consortium (James Hubert Blake, Paint Branch and Springbrook), Col. Zadok Magruder and Sherwood clusters; Town Hall at Paint Branch High School

Student Town Halls

Dr. Starr also will hold six Student Town Hall meetings—three in high schools and three in middle schools. The first Town Hall will be held on Thursday, October 17, at Poolesville High School.

The Student Town Hall meetings are an opportunity for Dr. Starr to hear directly from students about issues that are important to them. These events will be hosted by Justin Kim, the Student Member of the Board of Education. They will be archived on the MCPS website and shown on MCPS TV.

- Monday, Nov. 25, A. Mario Loiederman Middle School
- Tuesday, Jan. 28, Northwood High School
- Thursday, Feb. 27, Rosa Parks Middle School
- Tuesday, March 18, Watkins Mill High School
- Thursday, April 24, Herbert Hoover Middle School

State of the Schools

On Monday, November 11, Dr. Starr will deliver his second State of the Schools address at the Music Center at Strathmore. The event—2013 State of the Schools: Building Our Future Together—will provide Dr. Starr an opportunity to share his vision for preparing all students for success in the 21^st century and engaging the community in this important work. The event will also feature student performances and artwork throughout the Music Center. The event is free and open to the public.
