MCPS to Conduct Pilot Test of Recyclable Food Trays at Key MS

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has begun a pilot program to test the use of recycled paper trays in school cafeterias. The district is hoping to replace the polystyrene lunch trays it currently uses with recycled paper trays beginning in the 2014-2015 school year.

For the rest of the school year, Francis Scott Key Middle School will use a paper tray that may serve as an appropriate substitute for polystyrene.

“MCPS has an ongoing commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and teaching our students about the importance of sustainability,” said Superintendent Joshua Starr. “This pilot project is another step in our effort to embrace green practices in an affordable, efficient way.”

In the past, the cost of switching to recycled paper trays has been prohibitive. However, the MCPS Division of Food and Nutrition Services is collaborating with manufacturers and other school districts nationwide to identify a high-quality, affordable tray that can be used across the district.
