The Board of Education met yesterday [Tuesday, November 13] and, among other items, approved policies on policysetting and student transportation. The Board also took tentative action on the student transfer policy and approved a legislative platform. In addition, the Board reviewed an update on continuous improvement for special education and recognized the observance of Veterans’ Day and American Education Week.

Policy on Student Transportation

The Board approved Policy EEA, “Student Transportation,” reflecting a change in the definition of the measurement points used to determine walking distances, to the nearest point of residential property to the curb in front of the nearest door accessible for entry by students to the school.

Policy on Policysetting

The Board approved Policy BFA, “Policysetting,” that establishes the process by which policies are developed, revised and reviewed in the Montgomery County Public Schools.

Policy on Student Transfers

The Board tentatively approved for public comment amended Policy JEE, “Student Transfers,” which continues changes to the transfer regulation directed by the Board in December 1999 stating that transfers should be granted only by exception in documented hardship, when an older sibling attends the requested school, and to continue a feeder pattern at transition points.

Legislative Platform

The Board approved a legislative platform for circulation to members of the Maryland General Assembly, partner organizations, and community prior to the start of the 2002 legislative session.

Update on the Continuous Improvement of Special Education

The Board discussed an update on the work of the Continuous Improvement Team (CIT) for Special Education. The CIT provides critical analysis of the Department of Special Education’s development of collaborative partnerships with families and the community and the delivery of high-quality instruction in the least-restrictive environments.

American Education Week

The Board approved school system observance of American Education Week and its theme, “Together: Making Public Schools Great for Every Child.”

Veterans’ Day

The Board commended students, parents, MCPS staff, and the entire community for honoring and celebrating the contributions of veterans.
