Volunteers, Partnerships Honored at Champions for Children Ceremony

The inaugural Champions for Children recognition program and reception on May 29 honored volunteers, educators, and business-education partnerships for their outstanding contributions in support of student achievement.

Among the honorees were more than 60 teachers, administrators, programs, and schools that have won major awards during the past school year. In addition, outstanding volunteers and school volunteer programs, and outstanding examples of community and business collaboration were recognized.

Individual volunteers receiving awards were Nina Helwig, Fallsmead Elementary School; Bonnie Yazurlo, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School; and Bergie and Tom Spears, Paint Branch High School. School volunteer programs receiving special recognition were Bannockburn Elementary School, Rocky Hill Middle School, and Damascus High School.

The Partners in Business and Education Outstanding Business Partner Award was presented to The Gazette Newspapers for sponsorship of a newspaper club, scholarships for summer camp programs, and numerous other supports for Viers Mill Elementary School and its families.

The Employment Management Association Foundation Award was given to the Medical Careers Program in the Montgomery County Public Schools, Division of Career and Technology Education.

The Community Collaboration Award was presented to Sally Marchessault, retired coordinator of Volunteer and Community Resources, Montgomery County Public Schools.

Educators receiving special recognition were:

Dorothy J. Harris, science teacher, Quince Orchard High School
Kathy Brake, principal, Washington Grove Elementary School
Kristi Cameron, math and science support teacher, Glenallan Elementary School
Arlene Barte-Lowe, English and reading teacher, Takoma Park Middle School.

Sponsors of the recognition program are the Montgomery County Board of Education, the Montgomery County Council of PTAs, and the Montgomery County Business Roundtable for Education.
