Applications Now Available for Elementary Language Immersion Programs

February 1, 2019

Applications for elementary school language immersion programs in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) are now available. The application deadline for the 2019-2020 school year is Friday, April 26, 2019.

Elementary school language immersion programs begin in kindergarten and are offered in Chinese, French and Spanish. The district offers three Spanish, two French and two Chinese elementary language immersion programs at seven sites in the county. The two French programs and one of the Spanish programs are total immersion. In total immersion, all core subjects, including reading/language arts, are taught in the target language. Two of the Spanish programs and both Chinese programs are partial immersion. In partial immersion, some core subjects are taught in the target language.

For more information about elementary immersion programs and to download the Immersion Interest Form, visit the Special Programs website. Forms are also available at elementary schools.

Students with special needs are welcome to apply for the lottery. Please note that an Individual Education Program (IEP), best interest meeting, alternative placement, or ESOL programs, may supersede the immersion process. All students who participate in the lottery process will receive notification in mid–May. Students who are not selected for the program will be placed on a waitlist. Students are assigned in a random order to the waitlist and are invited to the program when a vacancy occurs.

For more information, parents can call the Division of Consortia Choice and Application Program Services (DCCAPS) at 240-740-2540.
