Board of Education Update: June 26, 2024

June 26, 2024

The Montgomery County Board of Education provides leadership and oversight for Montgomery County Public Schools. This week, the Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Thomas Taylor as superintendent and recognized the contributions of interim superintendent Dr. Monique Felder. The Board also announces the upcoming installation ceremony for the 47th Student Member of the Board, Praneel Suvarna.

Dr. Taylor Unanimously Appointed Superintendent

Dr. Thomas Taylor, MCPS alum, was formally appointed as the next leader for Maryland’s largest school district during the Montgomery County Board of Education’s June 25 meeting. Over the past week, the community had the opportunity to learn more about Dr. Taylor and his vision for MCPS.

Dr. Taylor will assume the role of superintendent in July and he is already preparing. Last week, he asked for families, students, staff, and community members to share their thoughts in this short survey. This information will not only help him become familiar with MCPS’ challenges and opportunities, it will help inform the next strategic plan.

The Board would like to thank the Montgomery County community for participating in the search process by providing input in a survey and at community meetings or focus groups. During the final interview stage, many organizations were invited to have a representative participate in the community panel interview. The superintendent search process was facilitated by Greenwood Asher & Associates. Learn more about the search process on our website.

The Board also expressed appreciation for Dr. Felder’s work to create stability for the school system and ensure a smooth transition for the next superintendent.  “Dr. Felder saw us through this important period of transition with steady and thoughtful leadership,” said Board President Karla Silvestre.

47th Student Member of the Board to be Installed July 1

The Montgomery County Board of Education will formally install the 47th Student Member of the Board (SMOB), Praneel Survarna, on July 1.

Suvarna, a senior at Clarksburg High School, begins his term upon installation. During his term, he will focus on school safety, particularly the drug crisis, and providing comprehensive mental health supports for all MCPS students. Suvarna encourages all students to be involved, share their voice, and advocate for the causes that matter most to them. To that end, he is committed to providing transparent communication with students during his term.

The SMOB installation ceremony will take place July 1, 4:00 p.m. at 15 W. Gude Drive. The ceremony is open to the public, with limited seating. It will also be livestreamed on the MCPS website.

June 25 Business Meeting Highlights

During the June 25 business meeting, the Board received a presentation on how MCPS is increasing work-based learning opportunities outside the classroom while also supporting business workplace needs. The discussion is an update to a January 11 resolution.

A pilot program during the 2024-25 school year will use the procurement process to connect businesses with work-based learning opportunities. Students will have access to a web-based platform to explore available work-based learning options. The goal of the pilot program is to increase all students’ access to work-based learning.

The Board also took final action to approve updates to Policy IKB, Homework.
