Environmental Design Assistant

OFFICIAL TITLE: Environmental Design Asst CODE: 6230 SQ/OQ: Optimal Qualified
WORKING TITLE: Environmental Design Assistant GRADE: 20 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, assists with coordination of the asbestos abatement program. The Environmental Design Assistant also plans, develops, organizes, and coordinates implementation of the MCPS Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. Ensures programs are in compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, laws and regulations. When new construction or major renovation is scheduled, the worker attends planning sessions with architects and contractors to coordinate the safe removal of asbestos for areas where construction will take place. Performs other related work as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of AHERA regulations, principles and techniques for handling and removal of asbestos; Working knowledge of integrated pest management. Ability to review plans and records in researching construction history. Ability to maintain records, prepare reports and compute cost estimates related to environmental projects and other environmental costs. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to read blueprints and architectural drawings. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Associates degree required. Bachelor¿s degree preferred in architecture, a physical science, engineering technology or closely related field. Asbestos and/or toxicology/IPM knowledge or experience preferred.. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered, which includes college coursework in the above fields.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland driver's license. Accreditation under AHERA standards as Building Inspector, Management Planner, Project Designer, and Supervisor within six months of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to work in dirty, dusty and uncomfortable conditions, and perform work requiring walking, climbing, inspecting and carrying of test equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Frequent overtime, night and weekend work .Ability to wear respiratory protection

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Examines and reviews architectural and mechanical plans and drawings, including maintenance records, to research history of building modifications and identify potential sites for asbestos contamination.

Performs on-site building inspections

Reviews cost estimates for environmental programs.

Develops and coordinates budget for environmental programs.

Working knowledge of common software applications (Microsoft Office)

Prepares plans, maintains records; compiles and writes status reports.

Communicates professionally with architects, engineers, contractors, building managers and municipal agencies on specifications.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
