WORKING TITLE: Publications Art Director GRADE: 23 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, operates, integrates and maintains various software systems and hardware devices associated with industrial graphics and printing. Applies creative judgment and application skills (Adobe Creative Suite) on the visual design of graphic communications materials produced by MCPS. Applies technical judgment on system acquisition and contractual maintenance required to sustain and improve pre-press and computer systems within the MCPS Print Shop. The work of this class includes assisting graphic specialists with both technical and creative job requirements, and collaborating with school staff and students pursuing publishing projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge to assess, improve, and sustain integrated systems associated with digital imaging of visual art planned for various industrial printing systems, including lithographic platemaking, large-format color plotters for vinyl and other materials, and direct-to-press printing of multi-page bound publications. Considerable knowledge of Outlook. Advanced professional correspondence skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED required. Minimum of twenty continuing education, training, or professional development courses (ie: college course work, commercial training/awareness seminars, MCPS-PDO). Minimum ten years of recent professional experience in digital imaging of graphic content for industrial printing operations. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be taken into consideration in evaluating an applicant¿s qualifications.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Valid driver¿s license required
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to move objects up to 25 lbs, and sustain arm, waist and leg motions. Ability to hear and see moving equipment components.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Use of private vehicle (reimbursement provided) to travel locally.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

¿ Reports to workplace according to duty schedule.

¿ Check e-mail messages consistently and respond as appropriate.


Participate in daily production planning meeting, coordinate hourly assignments within work group, and share information concerning upcoming equipment upgrades.

Retrieve and process job orders from outside sources (collaborating with Customer Service Specialist), or receive and pursue hard-copy Job Forms from operations supervisors.


Create electronic files and utilize advanced software applications for digital output to specialized materials.

Assess and present system acquisitions for ongoing improvements to technological operations within MCPS Custom Printing.


Complete preventive maintenance, trouble-shoot systems, contact outside service provider for specialized repair.

Performs related duties as required.
