OFFICIAL TITLE: Braillist CODE: 6710 SQ/OQ: Optimal Qualified
WORKING TITLE: Braillist GRADE: 18 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs braillist work in producing instructional materials for visually impaired students. Work of the class involves transcribing instructional materials into braille formats and codes for visually impaired students. Materials range from elementary texts to advanced material containing complicated subject matter.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of English Literacy Braille Code, grades 2 and 3, and Nemeth code. Ability to perform duties without technical supervision. Ability to prepare a variety of instructional materials for visually handicapped students. Skill in the transcription of braille format and codes. Good communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Associates degree required. Bachelors degree preferred. Training in the transcription of braille formats and codes required. Two plus years recent brailling experience required. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. Bachelor's degree desirable.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Certification as braille transcriber by the Library of Congress required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) None
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work nights, weekends and unusual hours as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs transcription of braille formats and codes.

2. Prepares a variety of instructional materials including textbooks, tests, daily assignments, units, maps, diagrams, etc., for visually handicapped students.

3. Confers directly with vision teacher regarding specific problems, formats, and special needs in the transcription of materials.

4. Provides staff in-service on revisions within braille codes, formats, etc.

5. Keeps updated on new transcribing rules and materials; as new materials become available, evaluates and advises supervisor on them.

6. Performs a variety of related work as required.
