WORKING TITLE: Maintenance Worker I Outdoor Education GRADE: 10 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs semiskilled work in maintaining buildings, grounds, and equipment at an outdoor educational facility. The work of the class involves a general building and grounds maintenance and maintenance of items and equipment used at the facility including: industrial power tools, canoes, planetarium, observatory, care of animals, and upkeep of confidence course. Workers interact on a regular basis with students, staff, chaperones, and community users of the faciliy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the practices, methods, and materials of several building and grounds maintenance trades; some knowledge of the care of animals. Ability to use and maintain the more common hand and power tools of the trade(s) to which assigned; ability to operate farm type tractors, and light automotive equipment in a safe and effective manner; ability and willingness to learn a wide variety of tasks required in building and grounds maintenance and improvement work. Good human relations skills. Knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience in the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland class D driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring the lifting and moving of heavy objects and to perform related strenuous labor, occasionally under adverse conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Must be available to work shifts and weekends. Some outside use of the Smith Center (non-MCPS, ICB use) requires sleeping at the Smith Center.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Sets up and maintains equipment and outdoor instructional areas used at the outdoor education facility including: planetarium, observatory, care of animals, trails, landscape conservation gardens, and upkeep of confidence course.

2. Performs semi-skilled building, grounds maintenance work, and support of outdoor environmental education instruction requiring use of common hand and power tools.

3. Operates a farm type tractor in mowing school lawns and grounds; trims trees with power saw and hauls brush; plants shrubbery and spreads lime and fertilizer,; digs post holes and erects chain-link fences; assists in the placing of black top, cement and stone; clears snow with tractors from sidewalks, parking lots, and other school areas.

4. Assists higher skilled workers in constructing and maintaining facilities.

5. Performs related work as required.
