SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs semiskilled and skilled work in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. Work in this class is characterized by general and varied construction or repair work involving knowledge of several maintenance areas such as general maintenance, carpentry, masonry. Workers lead personnel in crews and on specific work assignments. Designated positions operate several types of heavy vehicles with powered attachments. Instructions are received from a supervisor regarding work to be done, but the employee is expected to use considerable discretion in determining proper work methods. Periodic inspections of completed work to determine quality of work done are made. Assists in moving MCPS fleet vehicles, including school buses, and performs pre- and post-trip inspections. Assists as main courier for MCPS Board of Education offices, other departments, and external customers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of general maintenance and construction methods, tools, equipment, and materials. Working knowledge of the effective operation of such powered equipment as backhoes, trenchers, pressure washers and tractors. Ability to use and maintain the more common hand and power tools of the trades to which assigned. Ability to operate farm type tractors, buses or trucks with a GVW in excess of 26,000 pounds, and other equipment necessary to perform the maintenance work to which assigned. Ability to organize and effectively supervise the work of a small crew of maintenance workers and laborers. Ability to move heavy objects. Ability to complete pre- and post-trip bus inspections. Skill in the safe operation of equipment and use of tools of the assigned maintenance work. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience in work which provides a broad background in general maintenance work and detailed knowledge in the area of assignment required. At least one-year experience as a successful school bus operator, in good standing. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland class A or class B commercial driver's license, with airbrakes, passenger, and school bus endorsements, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring the lifting and moving of very heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs. and to perform related strenuous labor, occasionally under adverse conditions. Ability to meet prescribed annual physical examination and testing requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies. Required to wear personal protective equipment as required. Ability to be on call for deliveries.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Operates backhoe and trenchers in the installation and repair of electric, sewer, and water lines. 2. Assists trades workers in running cables and piping or putting in underground drains. 3. Cuts and levels swales, digs footings, and braces fencing. 4. Saws and chops trees, branches and roots. 5. Lays sod, trims trees and shrubbery and performs varied landscaping duties. 6. Operates forklifts to lift materials or heavy equipment at assigned job sites. 7. Constructs, installs, and repairs a variety of building supports and fixtures. 8. Builds and places forms for steps, curbs, sidewalks, small foundations, and other work. 9. Does finished cement work. 10. Operates hand, power and farm type tractor lawn mowers. 11. Cuts weeds and brush and rakes leaves and grass. 12. Cuts down and removes trees and shrubs. 13. Collects trash and refuse and loads it into a truck. 14. Removes graffiti from building and grounds surfaces. Uses various means including stripping, sand blasting, washing, bleaching and painting. 15. Acts as lead worker of a small crew and participates in a variety of grounds maintenance projects such as: grading, sodding, and seeding of landscape areas; repairing blacktop sidewalks and driveways; installing goal posts and back stops; maintaining all building and lot areas; and operating bulldozers, bucket trucks, and graders. 16. Serves as an on-call courier to the Board of Education and other offices. 17. Assists in moving MCPS fleet vehicles and school buses, from one location to another, as needed. Assists with bringing school buses from vendors and manufacturers to assigned locations. 18. Performs pre- and post-trip inspections on school buses, as needed. 19. Performs related work as required
