General Maintenance Assistant Supervisor

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, directs the work of a crew and participates in maintenance and construction work involving school grounds and play area. Employees in this class are responsible in assigned general maintenance areas for supervision of equipment operators, maintenance workers and laborers engaged in the maintenance of school grounds and in the construction of recreation facilities and other outdoor projects. Work may include the operation of heavy equipment and performance of difficult and advanced tasks. Some assignments involve exposure to inclement weather and to accident and injury hazards and disagreeable elements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of grounds maintenance and construction as applied to school grounds, athletic fields, and playground equipment. Considerable knowledge of the effective operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment such as graders, bulldozers, and tractors; working knowledge of the tools, materials, equipment, and techniques used in constructing and repairing asphalt and concrete surfaces; considerable knowledge of the traffic and safety rules and of the hazards involved in the use of heavy equipment. Ability to assign, supervise, and coordinate the work of equipment operators and maintenance workers. Skill in the operation of bulldozers, graders, tractors, and related equipment. Good human relations and communications skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment in the maintenance of grounds and general construction work, including some experience in a supervisory capacity. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland CDL driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring considerable physical exertion and lifting/moving of heavy objects.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work overtime as required.:

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Plans and supervises the work of a crew of equipment operators and general maintenance workers in a variety of grounds assignments, such as: grading, sodding, and seeding grounds, trimming and removing trees and clearing wooded areas, installing and repairing chain-link fences, repairing blacktop walkways, playgrounds driveways, and parking areas, digging drainage ditches, installing and removing goal posts and scoreboards and grading and repairing ball fields and cinder tracks.

2. May occasionally operate bulldozers and graders in the more difficult and skilled grounds maintenance and road construction work.

3. Trains subordinates in the routine operation and maintenance of equipment.

4. Performs related work as required.
