SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of appliances and tools, including trash compactors and art room equipment. Work in this class involves responsibility for performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks in accordance with standard practices. Assignments are received either orally or through written work orders and may be accompanied by diagrams or sketches. Work is generally performed independently subject to inspection for compliance with instructions and conformance with accepted safety standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials, and tools used in the repair of appliances and tools; considerable knowledge of a wide variety of appliances and tools common to school use; working knowledge of applicable electrical codes. Ability to read, write, and prepare basic reports. Ability to find and correct defects in electrical appliances; ability to read electrical wiring diagrams to repair or maintain appliances. Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools of the trade. Good human relations and communications skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Considerable responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical appliances and tools, including trash compactors and art room equipment. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C driver's license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring occasional moderate physical exertion and lifting/moving of moderately heavy objects.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Employees in this position are considered emergency personnel and may be required to report to buildings during inclement weather. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Checks, adjusts, repairs and maintains in good working order all electrical appliances, tools, and equipment used in the school system, including classroom instructional equipment, art room equipment, science lab equipment, kitchen appliances, and shop tools. This includes responsibility for such items as coffee pots, steam irons, toasters, blenders, mixers, can openers, electric drills, and power sanders, trash compactors, commercial washers and dryer, athletic equipment, and hydraulic equipment, including automotive lifts.

Determines whether appliances, equipment and tools should be repaired or replaced.

Diagnoses defects and makes extensive shop repairs to electric appliances, equipment and tools; makes minor repairs and routine adjustments at the school or central office site.

Obtains and maintains supply of parts.

Performs related work as required.
