WORKING TITLE: Maintenance Electrician II GRADE: 18 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs skilled and minor supervisory work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, units, and related equipment. This is a senior crafts classification involving an advanced knowledge of high amperage electrical systems, electrical motors, and other equipment. Employees in this class frequently act as work leader and assist the supervisor in the overall supervision of the section. Nature of work requires responding to weekend or evening emergency calls involving electrical problems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Successful completion of the MCPS Electrical written (knowledge) and skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required score. Considerable knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and equipment of engineering work materials, and tools of the electrical trade; Considerable knowledge of approved methods and practices in installing, maintaining, and repairing electric lighting and wiring systems, motors, and small power generators, switches and control equipment, and other common electrical appliances and equipment; considerable knowledge of electrical code requirements and approved safety standards as they relate to electric wiring and equipment; considerable knowledge of occupational hazards surrounding the work of electricians and of necessary precautionary measures. Ability to work from electrical diagrams and blueprints; ability to plan and supervise the work of a small crew of skilled electricians and helpers; ability to keep time and material work records. Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools of the trade. Good human relations and communications skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. Considerable experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of electrical equipment and high amperage electrical systems. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C driver's license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to perform work requiring moderate physical exertion and lifting/moving of moderately heavy objects. Ability to work from stepladders and at moderate heights.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to respond to emergency work requirements. Successful completion of the MCPS Electrical written (knowledge) and skills (demonstration) tests at the minimum or higher required score.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Participates in making layouts and sketches of major electrical projects and in preparing estimates of materials, time, and labor necessary to complete jobs.

Acts as work leader of a crew of skilled electricians and helpers on long or major projects, assigning duties and inspecting completed work.

Maintains and repairs motors in the heating, ventilating, and water systems in all buildings. Inspects and repairs motor controls.

Pulls defective motors and makes shop repairs, such as turning armatures and replacing bearings and other parts.

Performs the more difficult phases of installing, maintaining and repairing electrical wiring, controls, and equipment.

Understands and applies principles of performance evaluation and professional growth standards for employees.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
