SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under close supervision, performs routine manual and clerical work in the selection, storage, inventory control, issuance, loading and delivery of supply and food items or in the delivery of mail. Work involves continuous moving of materials by hand or electric material handling equipment. Work requires the safe and efficient operation of electric material handling equipment. Some positions in this classification may require operation of a light truck and/or performing central mail room work in accordance with specific instructions. Work of this class requires following clearly established policies and regulations governing the processing of incoming and outgoing mail, including U.S. mail, inter-office mail, and pony mail. Work involves picking up mail from the post office, and sorting and distributing to addressees. Workers operate automobiles and vans, mail handling equipment, and push carts. Work requires considerable moving of bulky, moderately heavy packages.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Some knowledge of warehousing and storekeeping practices and procedures. Knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of power material handling equipment. Knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of a light truck, traffic rules and regulations. Ability to rapidly and accurately fill orders, including proper palletization of product. Ability to check supplies and other materials rapidly and accurately. Ability to keep ample store records and reports. Ability to operate power pallet trucks and other warehouse equipment in accordance with established safety standards. Ability to read, follow simple oral and written instructions, write, and make computations at the level required by the position duties. Skill in the operation of a light truck under all types of weather conditions required for some positions. Good communication and human relations skills. Some knowledge of modem office practices and procedures. Ability to learn assigned clerical and mail handling tasks readily and to follow prescribed routines. Ability to learn, recognize and recall names of addressees in the central offices and to match names to their office locations. Skill in processing and sorting large quantities of inter-office and incoming U.S. mail. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of the ninth grade required. High School or GED diploma preferred. Some experience as a stock clerk. Some experience in the operation of a light truck required for some positions. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class C noncommercial driver's license, or equivalent. Completion or ability to complete an OSHA approved certification program on operation of power industrial equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to grasp and move heavy items weighing up to 100 lbs. and to perform work requiring almost continuous moving of materials.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work overtime, including weekends.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Fills orders requested on warehousing shipping lists by selecting such items as paper, pencils, textbooks, instructional aids, maintenance equipment and materials, food and related items, and janitorial supplies.

2. May pack and prepare material for shipment.

3. Loads trucks with supplies and books at warehouse for delivery to schools and offices.

4. Assists in unloading trucks at the delivery point.

5. Picks up desks, chairs, and other furniture and gymnasium equipment for delivery to schools and offices.

6. Checks product and supplies against delivery documents.

7. Assists in the maintenance of perpetual inventory and keeps simple records.

8. Cleans trucks, cleans shelves, sweeps or mops floors, cleans loading dock and roadway as required.

9. Cleans other areas of the warehouse and keeps supplies in a neat and orderly condition; operates power and manual warehouse equipment in the movement of stock.

10. Drives an automobile or van to pick up mail from post office.

11. Receives and sorts incoming U.S. and inter-office mail and prepares bulk items for distribution; determines location of employees for whom incomplete address has been given.

12. On an assigned route within the central office building, pushes mail cart and receives and delivers inter-office and U.S. mail according to a prescribed schedule; makes special pickups as instructed.

13. Occasionally operates a motor vehicle in delivering or receiving U.S. and inter-office mail between building locations.

14. Operates mailing and postal equipment such as string machines, scales and mailing machines.

15. May operate motor vehicle to deliver processed U.S. mail to U.S. post office.

16. Performs supply distribution duties periodically.

17. Performs related work as required.
