Summary Description:
Under general supervision, operates tractor-trailer units in the receipt, delivery, and transportation of equipment, materials, and supplies to schools and operating departments. Work in this class involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of a tractor-trailer in the loading, transporting, and unloading of maintenance supplies, furniture, equipment, and other school-related materials. Nature of work involves adherence to rigid delivery schedule regardless of weather conditions. Employees in this class must operate tractor-trailer units in accordance with requirements set forth in the Maryland Department of Transportation publication, Lawful Weight
Physical Demands:
Ability to withstand the fatiguing elements involved in operating a tractor-trailer for long periods of time under varying weather conditions. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.

Ability to work overtime and unusual hours as required. |
Considerable knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of the precautions necessary to avoid accidents, and of the requirements set forth in the Maryland Department of Transportation publication related to weight limits. Ability to manipulate vehicle in narrow or crowded areas. Ability to inspect and make minor repairs and/or adjustments to heavy automotive equipment. Ability to keep simple records and prepare routine reports. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to read and write. Ability to work efficiently with others and provide excellent customer service. Skill in the operation of a tractor-trailer unit. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Education Training Experience:High School or GED diploma required. Considerable experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment including experience in the operation of a tractor-trailer. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:Possession of a valid commercial Maryland class A driver^s license, or equivalent. Endorsement Code H¿Hazardous Materials required or the ability to acquire the Code H within six months of hire.

Example Duties:1. Operates tractor-trailer units and smaller trucks (vans and stepvans) in picking up and delivering supplies, books, equipment, and other instructional materials; periodically assigns and supervises the work of a small crew of supply service workers in these tasks; may assist in the loading or unloading of cargo and checking to see that loads are properly secured for transport. 2. Performs complete daily inspection of vehicle prior to departure and makes such necessary minor repairs and/or adjustments which can be effected with small hand tools; fills out trip tickets and completes daily reports of deliveries. 3. Trains other employees as assigned in the operation of equipment and conduct of duties of this classification. 4. Performs related work as required.
