WORKING TITLE: Compactor Truck Operator GRADE: 11 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, operates a trash compactor truck on a scheduled daily route and performs a variety of tasks in connection with such operations. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of compactor truck in the loading, transporting, and unloading of compacted trash and burnable waste material. Delivery schedules and related assignments are outlined in detail by supervisors, standard procedures are followed and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation. Supervision may be exercised over helpers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of the precautions necessary to avoid accidents; knowledge of refuse pick up and disposal activities and the operation of a trash compactor truck. Ability to supervise trash service workers and helpers. Ability to inspect and make minor repairs and adjustments to heavy automotive equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and prepare simple reports. Skill in the operation of a trash compactor truck. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of the ninth grade required. High School or GED diploma preferred. Experience in the loading and operation of a trash compactor truck. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class B driver's license, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Excellent physical condition and ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods under difficult weather conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies. Required to wear personal protective equipment as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Loads compacted trash bags into trash truck; polices pickup area for debris; observes safety rules and practices in loading truck with burnable waste material.

2. Operates compactor truck in pickup from schools and administrative offices according to predetermined schedule; transports material to dump site, county incinerator, or area landfill; operates mechanism for loading, compressing, and dumping refuse.

3. Collects delivery ticket from dump attendant or weighman ascertaining poundage of refuse disposed; completes and turns in daily report of route coverage and/or unusual problems encountered.

4. Performs complete daily check of vehicle prior to departure; performs minor repairs on equipment and keeps equipment clean.

5. Performs related work as required.
