Summary Description:
Under general supervision, supervises and leads a team of routing specialists. Oversees day-to-day operations related to routing transportation to and from schools and locations within assigned region. Takes responsibility for overall team and individual team member performance. Coordinates the sharing of resources within their region and works with the other regional routers to share resources across regions. Builds and coordinates routes for complex programs as communicated by supervisory staff.
Physical Demands:
Position requires operation of keyboard device and pointing device for extended periods.

Considerable overtime required during Summer and other peak periods. |
Extensive knowledge of the local street and road system. General routing strategies; knowledge of Windows operating system and Microsoft Office software. Extensive understanding of fleet utilization. Considerable understanding of MCPS programs and associated student abilities/needs across programs. Considerable knowledge of program locations and the implications thereof. Ability to maximize use of resources through high level resource shifts. Ability to solve scheduling and resource demand conflicts. Ability to work effectively with program managers and staff of MCPS and private programs. Ability to balance demands from multiple customer groups. Ability to supervise a team of individuals. Passing score on the MCPS DOT Routing Skills Assessment. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS). |
Education Training Experience:High School or GED diploma required. Associate's degree preferred. Training and/or experience in computer operations or networked personal computers. Successful experience as a transportation routing specialist or other similar position, and some college course work or comparable work experience desirable. Supervisory experience a plus. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:Possession of a valid Maryland State Noncommercial Class C driver's license (or equivalent). |
Example Duties:1. Performs all the functions of the transportation routing specialist position.2. Assigns and balances work load of assigned region and with regional teams.3. Develops bus routes for more complex programs.4. Understands and follows MCPS policies, safety guidelines, and DOT procedures related to routing and ensures their team does also.5. Instructs, disseminates and/or handles student transportation notifications to include deletions, information, and necessary changes.6. Works with Depot Management to implement approved changes.7. Makes scheduling recommendations and adjustments with regional teams and supervisory staff.8. Performs related work as required. |
