Trash Services Worker

OFFICIAL TITLE: Sanitation Service Worker CODE: 9430 SQ/OQ: Senior Qualified
WORKING TITLE: Trash Services Worker GRADE: 09 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs general labor of more than ordinary difficulty in the loading and unloading of trash compactor trucks; operates the compactor truck in the absence of the regularly assigned driver; and performs related work. This work consists of manual tasks of a physically demanding nature. Employees in this class work full or part-time as members of the trash disposal crew. When not so engaged, they perform other specified duties and responsibilities comparable in level and kind to those assigned to General Maintenance Workers II. Directions as to how the work is done are specific, but the worker carries out recurring assignments independently.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of refuse pickup and disposal activities; and codes related to what is burnable and recyclable, and handling of disposal of hazardous/toxic materials. Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of the precautions necessary to avoid accidents; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; willingness to perform routine and heavy manual work for an extended period under difficult weather conditions; ability to lift and carry heavy articles; good physical condition. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of the ninth grade required. High School or GED diploma preferred. Some manual labor experience, preferably in a refuse or trash collection operation. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial Class C or equivalent driver's license and the ability to acquire a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B within 6 months of starting date of employment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Excellent physical condition and ability to perform heavy manual work for an extended period under difficult weather conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies. Required to wear personal protective equipment as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Loads garbage, rough trash and other waste material; loads refuse on compactor trucks; operates packing levers and disposal mechanisms.

2. Lifts and moves heavy objects and places on carrier; polices trash storage area for debris and litter; directs driver in proper movement of vehicle for garbage pickup and dumping operations.

3. Washes compactor trucks and assists in the routine servicing and maintenance of the units.

4. When substituting for the driver, operates compactor truck in pickup from schools and administrative offices; transports materials to collection center; operates mechanism for loading, compressing and dumping refuse; completes and turns in daily report; performs a variety of heavy, manual work; operates equipment (e.g. backhoe) and uses tools expected of a general maintenance worker II.
