1. Reminder: Monday April 22 is an Asynchronous Learning Day

Monday, April 22 is an asynchronous learning day and will be used as a make-up instructional day for students. Students will be sent home with assignments to complete independently. Asynchronous learning describes educational activities and assignments that engage students in learning without live instruction or the use of technology. Students must complete assignments to count toward their attendance for the day.

2. Praneel Suvarna Selected as Next Student Member of the Board (SMOB)

Praneel Suvarna, a junior at Clarksburg High School, has been elected the Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) for the 2024-2025 school year. Mr. Suvarna’s term begins on July 1, 2024.

More than 58,927 secondary students cast ballots during the election on April 17.

3. BOE Seeking Comment on Education of English Language Learners

The Board of Education is seeking comments on proposed amendments to Policy IOD, Education of Emergent Multilingual Learners. Language translations for the public comment page are in development and will be posted as soon as they are available. Read more.

The Board is also seeking public comment on proposed amendments to Policy IKB, Homework and Policy GEA, Board Appointment of MCPS Leaders.

4. Student PSA on Bullying, Harassment and Hate-Bias

A group of MCPS students have come together to spread awareness about the impact of bullying, harassment and hate-bias. This student-led video campaign is part of the ongoing work to address and help educate their peers and the school community.

Be sure to join us for the livestream announcement of the Montgomery County Teacher of the Year on Wednesday, May 1. The 2024–2025 Teacher of the Year finalists are: Janie Earle, kindergarten teacher at Poolesville Elementary School; Carrie Kraynak, English Language Development teacher at Flower Hill Elementary School; Morgan Patel, social studies teacher at Montgomery Blair High School; and Melissa Porter Parks, English Language Development teacher at Gaithersburg High School.

Save the Date: Safety Day Set For May 11

The Montgomery Department of Transportation invites all MCPS families to Safety Day on Saturday, May 11 in the Carver Educational Services Center (CESC) parking lot in Rockville. Safety Day brings the community together to learn more about traffic safety in a fun and festive environment. CESC is located at 850 Hungerford Drive.

Five MCPS graduating seniors have received 2024 Amazon Future Engineer Scholarships worth up to $40,000 over four years to pursue a degree in computer science or engineering.

Students Engage in College and Career Readiness Activities and Programs

All Grade 9 students now have the opportunity to experience an in-person or virtual college tour this spring. The College Tour experience provides close to 7,000 ninth grade students early exposure to college as a post-secondary option, assisting them in refining their preferences and learning more about college life, programs and admissions.

MCPS Students Publish Children’s Book About Sister to
Spread Awareness About Autism

Sisters Neeyo Ouelega, a sixth grader at Argyle Middle School, and Seti Ouelega, a junior at Watkins Mill High School and college freshman at Montgomery College, have co-authored and self-published a children’s book titled “Marvelous Meghan: Our Big Sister.” The book chronicles life with their older sister, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of four.
