Dear MCPS Community,
It is great to see that spring has sprung and the thermostat is rising. It is hard to believe that just a few weeks ago, our community navigated some significant snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. The result of that weather meant several closures, delays, and cancellations of extracurricular activities. Certainly a frustrating time for students, staff, and families alike.
Due to four resulting closures, and to meet the state's requirement of 180 days of instruction, the school year will now be extended to Tuesday, June 17, with the last three days of school designated as early release days. This schedule will allow our staff important time to complete end-of-year work.
As a reminder: schools and offices were closed on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025 and Wednesday, Feb. 12. The 2024–2025 MCPS school calendar includes 182 instructional days, two more than the state of Maryland's minimum requirement of 180. As a result, the closures on Jan. 6 and Jan. 7 will not affect the school calendar. As previously announced, with the closure on Jan. 8 the school year was extended to June 16 leaving one more make-up day as a result of the closure on Feb. 12. Montgomery County Public Schools petitioned the Maryland State Department of Education to waive a requirement to make up the remaining day, but the request was denied.
Therefore, the last day of school will now be Tuesday, June 17, with Friday, June 13, Monday, June 16, and Tuesday, June 17 all being early release days for students. This important change is to help accommodate staff schedules and end-of-semester grade reporting and professional development requirements in the final days of the school year. The final day for both students and educators is now Tuesday, June. 17. To assist with an efficient close to the school year, we ask that late make-up work be submitted to teachers no later than Friday, June 13. We know this is a change and although it is not entirely unexpected, we also realize that families may have already made plans. We understand this.
Spring break is next week; enjoy this time to relax, recharge, and spend time with friends and family.
