Questions About Transition Day?
We’ve Got the Answers

First Bell to the Last Bell, Transition Day is a Full Day of School.

On Monday, Aug. 25, Montgomery County Public Schools will hold its first-ever Student Transition Day, an all-day, non-instructional school experience designed to ease the transition for students entering new school levels or buildings. It is a good day to try out your school routine.

Students will get a head start on navigating their new school. They will meet principals and teachers, tour the building, practice routines and connect with classmates, before the official first day of school on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Who attends:

  • All students entering Kindergarten, Grade 6 and Grade 9.

  • Incoming Grade 3 students attending intermediate schools (Grades 3 - 5).

  • Any other students, new to these schools, outside of these grades may be on an alternative schedule that was developed by individual schools to meet their specific needs, however they are welcome to attend for the duration of the day. For these students, the goal is to address challenges, transportation for example.

Here is what students can expect during transition day:

  • Elementary: School tour, meet-and-greet with administrators and teachers, ice-breakers, a preview of specials.

  • Middle School: Become familiar with their schedules, locker practice, tech logins, athletics and club previews and student-led tours.

  • High School: Become familiar with their schedule, class transitions, athletics and extracurricular showcases and guidance on student rights and responsibilities.

  • For All Levels: Arrival/dismissal practice, overview of routines, code of conduct review and optional parent/guardian info sessions.

Other things you need to know about Transition Day:

  • This is a good opportunity to find your bus stop. School buses will run on regular first-day schedules - schedules can be found here.

  • Lunch will be available to all students free of charge, or students may bring their own.

  • Before and aftercare availability varies by school—contact your school for details.
