Important Update: Changes to the School Calendar

Dear MCPS Families,

We are writing to again share an important update regarding the Montgomery County Public Schools calendar for the remainder of the 2025–2026 school year. There will likely be another message about our calendar before Spring Break.

In consultation with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), MCPS is working in good faith to adjust our calendar in a way that maintains instructional time and asks the state to waive the requirement to add the additional days to the end of the school year.

The News

We are making the following calendar adjustments now:

  • April 15, previously scheduled as a non-instructional day for teacher grading and planning at the end of the marking period, will now be an early-release day for students.

  • The marking period will still end on April 14 but grade reporting will be delayed until April 20.

  • March 20 will remain a non-instructional day for students, per a Board of Education vote on February 19

Impact on the Last Day of School
As you know, this winter’s severe weather forced us to close schools several times. Under current Maryland regulations, those missed days have to be made up either through designated make-up days in the calendar and, if necessary, by extending the school year. That is why we recently announced that our calendar had been adjusted to add days to the end of our school year, setting the last day of school to June 26.

The goal of this adjustment is to add time within the school year and request relief from the State for families and staff from the calendar extending late into June.

Any change and certainly repeated changes to the school calendar do affect family schedules and staff planning, and yet another adjustment is not ideal. However, we believe the opportunity to end the school year earlier would better support students, families, and staff across our school community.
