  Meet MCPS’ New Student Member of the Board: Leul Dawit

The Montgomery County Board of Education has formally installed Leul Dawit, a rising junior at Northwood High School, as its 49th Student Member of the Board (SMOB). As the student voice on the Board, Dawit will represent the interests and perspectives of more than 155,000 students across Montgomery County. Read more.

 
  Meet the Student Representing Maryland: Lorena Wu

Lorena Wu, a rising junior at Poolesville High School, was sworn in as the 2026-2027 Maryland Student Member of the Board (SMOB) on July 1 after being appointed by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore earlier this year. Read more

 
  Back-to-School Starts Aug. 22: Find Your Fair!

MCPS will host six regional Back-to-School Fairs for the kickoff of the 2026–2027 school year on Saturday, Aug. 22. Each fair will feature easy-to-navigate zones where families can find what they need, and have knowledgeable staff who can answer questions and provide support. Community organizations, government agencies and after-school providers will also be on hand to share available resources, opportunities and services. To make the day more enjoyable, each fair will feature family-friendly activities, giveaways and fun! Read more for the host high schools and their fair times.

 
  The Work Behind the Welcome Back

It’s less than seven weeks before the first day of school (Tuesday, Aug. 25) and we have a lengthy list of tasks to accomplish before then! From cleaning classrooms and maintaining buses to training staff and planning schedules, MCPS is getting ready for students’ return. Read more.

  Get in the Game This Fall; Three Sports Clinics Will Offer Free Physicals

Registration for fall sports high school tryouts opens on ParentVue at noon on Monday, July 13. Fall athletic teams may begin tryouts on Wednesday, Aug. 12. If students are registered for summer conditioning, they must still register for their fall sport to be eligible to participate. Middle school sports registration will open on Monday, Aug. 10. NEW for the 2026-2027 school year, sixth graders will be eligible to participate in interscholastic athletics. Montgomery County’s Mobile Health Clinic is offering three free sports physicals this summer for students to complete their required athletic physicals before the fall season. Read more.

 
  Drive for Supplies Offers Back-to-School Essentials for Families

The annual Drive for Supplies event will take place from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. on Friday, July 24 at Gaithersburg High School, 101 Education Blvd. in Gaithersburg. Families can pick up free gently used school supplies, and the UpCounty Hub and Rise-N-Shine Foundation will be distributing food boxes to families. There will also be opportunities to sign up for SNAP benefits, free and reduced-price meals and summer support programs.

 
  There’s Still Time to Enroll in Pre-K and Head Start

Will your child be 4 years old by Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026? Registration for free Prekindergarten and Head Start programs is open for the 2026-2027 school year. Space is still available in some MCPS schools and with private providers of early education for income-eligible families. To register, families may visit the Pre-K/Head Start office at 4910 Macon Road in Rockville, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

  Make a Difference — and Earn SSL Hours

Looking for a fun summer project with purpose?

The Association for Safe International Road Travel and the Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association are sponsoring a public service announcement competition focused on road safety and how to keep yourself and others safe on the roads. Middle school and high school students who submit a quality PSA that meets the requirements will earn 10 Student Service Learning (SSL) hours and have a chance to win an Amazon gift card. Get the details and submit an entry. Deadline: 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4
