  Turn Those Tassels; Look Out World!

Thousands of MCPS graduates have been walking across the stage to receive their high school diplomas this week, as commencements have gotten underway. They will continue through Friday, June 12.   Board Adopts FY 2027 Operating Budget; Reductions Impact Some Staffing and Programs

Today (June 4), the Board of Education took final action on the Fiscal Year 2027 Operating Budget following the County Council's funding decision, which left Montgomery County Public Schools $36 million below its requested budget. MCPS will continue to meet all state and federal requirements and provide critical services to students.

  Third Quarter Academic Performance Shows Progress in Literacy, Mathematics

At its work session on June 4, the Board received a third-quarter academic performance update showing encouraging gains in literacy and mathematics. The presentation highlighted improvements in early literacy, with the percentage of students meeting benchmark expectations increasing from 57.8% to 65.7% on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy (DIBELS) and from 62.3% to 72% on Lectura compared to last year (from fall 2025 to winter 2026) — both key measures of literacy proficiency.   State Highlights Innovations in MCPS Gifted and Talented Programs

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has recognized MCPS as one of only four school systems featured in its 2025–2026 Gifted and Talented Impact Series, highlighting innovative approaches to advanced learning. Read more.

 
  Washington Post Awards Honor Little Bennett Principal, Rock View Educator

The Washington Post announced the winners and finalists of its 2026 Principal and Teacher of the Year Awards on June 4. Each year, The Post presents the awards to encourage excellence in school leadership and contributions to the improvement of education in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.   Two Named Finalists for State Librarian Award

Two media specialists are finalists for the 2026 Maryland School Librarian of the Year award, which honors a school librarian for exemplary service and outstanding achievements in the field of school library media. Alexandra Moses from Highland Elementary School and Daria Taylor from Clarksburg Elementary School are two of the top 10 finalists for the state recognition.

Laura Ellis of Wheaton High School and Melissa King of Flower Hill Elementary School, were also nominated for the award. The winner will be announced at the Maryland Association of School Librarians Conference in October. Read more.

 
  Website Updated with BOE-Adopted Boundary Reassignments

The boundary website has been updated with the Board of Education-adopted boundary reassignments beginning in the 2027-2028 school year for both boundary studies.

Families can find more information about the middle and/or high school boundary reassignments, as well as the Board of Education-adopted implementation timeline. The interactive map tool with the Board-adopted boundary reassignments is available with the existing elementary, middle and high school assignments and Board-approved middle and high school reassignments beginning in the 2027-2028 school year

  School’s (Soon) Out, Giving Back Is In

Join us for the 25th annual Drive for Supplies from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. on Friday, July 24 at Gaithersburg High School, 101 Education Blvd. in Gaithersburg. Families are invited to join us for a fun and meaningful day of support, community and connection. Pick up free gently used school supplies. In addition, the UpCounty Hub and Rise-N-Shine Foundation will be distributing food boxes to families, and there will be opportunities to sign up for vital services, such as SNAP benefits, free and reduced-price meals and summer support programs.

Students can earn Service Learning hours for volunteering to unpack, sort and repackage supplies before and during the event. Volunteers are needed July 20–July 23.

  Upcoming Schedule Reminders

Wednesday, June 17 is a full day of school for students. The last day of school is Thursday, June 18, and it is an early release day for K–12 students. Friday, June 19 is a systemwide closure; all MCPS schools and offices will be closed.

Final report cards will be available in ParentVue by Monday, June 29, and mailed home by Tuesday, June 30.

Encourage Students to Take a Seat at the Table

Students are encouraged to apply for the Board of Education’s Advisory Committee on Communication and Community Engagement for the 2026–2027 school year. This is an opportunity to collaborate with district leaders, strengthen communication and community engagement efforts on key topics, and represent student voice on important issues impacting MCPS. Applications are due by noon on Friday, June 19. Apply.

 
  Turn Your Summer Into Service

Summer is a wonderful time for middle and high school students to engage in Student Service Learning (SSL) opportunities and earn SSL hours towards meeting the 75-hour state graduation requirement! Current fifth grade students can begin earning SSL hours starting Friday, June 19.

MCPS Regulations Amendments Available for Review

MCPS is seeking public input on proposed revisions to several regulations currently under review. Families, students, staff, and community members are encouraged to review the draft changes and provide feedback on the proposed revisions.

Draft revisions currently available for public comment address topics including Grading and Reporting; Placement, Promotion, Retention and Acceleration of Students; Personal Mobile Devices (Cell Phones); Comprehensive Health Education and Student Attendance.

  USG Offers Free Career Exploration Program

The Universities at Shady Grove is hosting a free reachHIRE Summer Bridge program on June 29–July 1 (9 a.m.- 3 p.m. each day). The program, open to rising sophomores through seniors, will offer opportunities to connect with professionals to gain insight into future academic and career options. Students will work in teams to build career readiness skills through interactive workshops and explore academic programs and careers through hands-on activities. Lunch is included. Register.

 
  Reminders
  • BOE Seeks Applicants for Ethics Panel: The appointment is for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2026. Applicants must submit a letter of interest and resumé or other supporting documentation by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 12.
  • My Future Fairs: Families of Grade 7 students are invited to attend information sessions to learn more about high school options. Beginning in fall 2027, MCPS will launch a new Regional High School Model, expanding access to specialized programs across the county. Students may choose to apply to regional programs based on their interests. For more information, visit the High School Regional Programs webpage. Next sessions coming up June 8, 10, 11 and 15
  • Upcoming Math Changes: Beginning next year, MCPS will implement a cluster model for mathematics instruction. Classes will be organized to reduce the broad range of instructional levels within a classroom, which will make it more manageable for teachers to plan instruction effectively, differentiate learning experiences, and provide timely support and enrichment for students.
