On the Road to a Safe School Year: Bus Routes and Safety Tips

Bus routes are posted on the Division of Transportation Services website or on the front of your school’s website in the School Information box. Please remember that buses may run late due to traffic, arrival and dismissal congestion, student support, etc. Questions? Find your transportation manager. Be sure to have your student’s ID, route number and school ready when calling the bus depot assigned to your child(ren).
With a new school year beginning, it is important to remind students and families about school bus safety, including expectations for when students are entering and exiting buses, as well as behavior on board the bus. MCPS has more than 1,200 bus routes that serve more than 100,000 Montgomery County students every day.
Safety is our top priority, and the school bus is an extension of the classroom. Students are expected to adhere to the same standards of behavior on a school bus as in school.
We also want to highlight Maryland school bus laws for motorists to ensure they are aware of when and how to stop for school buses to ensure student safety.
For those who drive a student to or from school, please remember:
- Consider walking or biking with the child, or have your student ride the school bus if you receive bus service, to reduce traffic congestion.
- Obey all traffic laws and speed limits, especially the speed limits in school zones.
- Do not pass other vehicles in school zones or at marked crosswalks.
- Do not change lanes in school zones.
- Do not make U-turns in school zones.
- Do not text or otherwise be distracted while driving.
- Be patient and attentive.
- If you park on the street, park in a legal space and walk the rest of the way.
