Empowering Student Voices, Stories and Strengths

On Oct. 9, the 4th annual Youth Leadership Summit was held at Montgomery College's Germantown Campus, bringing together 200 students from 10 upcounty high schools: Gaithersburg, Watkins Mill, Seneca Valley, Clarksburg, Northwest, Quince Orchard, Magruder, Rockville, Richard Montgomery and Damascus.

The summit focused on Emergent Multilingual Learners (EMLs) and international students, providing a welcoming space where students connected, celebrated their diverse backgrounds, developed leadership skills, and recognized the value of their voices and experiences.

Students participated in dialogue circles focused on the immigrant experience, where they shared personal journeys, challenges, hopes and dreams. They also connected with community organizations; learned about opportunities at Montgomery College, and heard from college students who shared their experiences. The day included music, activities, raffles and opportunities to build meaningful connections with peers from other schools.

What makes this summit special is the opportunity for students to see that they are not alone, says Oscar Alvarenga, newcomers transition coordinator in the Department of International Admissions.

“Many of our students have experienced significant transitions, including adjusting to a new country, language and educational system,” he said. “We want them to leave knowing that their stories matter, their cultures and experiences are strengths, and they belong in our school communities.”

Many community partners collaborated to bring this event to fruition. Among them: S.O.N.S., Catholic Charities, Sheppard Pratt, Identity, Montgomery County Lighthouse and Montgomery College.

A second Youth Leadership Summit will be held in the spring for 10 downcounty schools. See photos from the event.
