National Principals Month: Q&A with Tiffany Awkard, Silver Creek Middle School
Posted On October 20, 2026
October is National Principals Month. Throughout the month, MCPS is recognizing the dedicated leaders who guide our schools and support students, staff and families every day. To celebrate, we’re highlighting a few principals around the county to learn more about what inspires them and the impact they hope to make in their school communities. Get to know these leaders, their passions and a few fun facts.
How long have you been with MCPS?
I am proudly entering my 25th year with Montgomery County Public Schools.
How long have you been at Silver Creek Middle School?
I am entering my seventh year serving as the proud principal of Silver Creek Middle School.
What keeps you inspired and motivated in your work as a principal?
My greatest inspiration comes from our students and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in their lives. Every day, I am reminded that the work we do as educators extends far beyond academics. We are helping our students discover who they are, recognize their strengths, develop confidence and begin to envision the possibilities for their futures. I have always believed that leadership is about being an agent of change and creating opportunities for others to succeed. It is such a great feeling to see a student who once doubted their abilities begin to believe in themselves, take risks, overcome challenges and recognize their own potential. Those moments remind me why I chose this profession and why I remain so passionate about it. Our students are our future. It is a privilege to help nurture their talents, amplify their voices and ensure they know they matter. I want every student to know that their circumstances do not define their possibilities and whatever they set their mind to doing they can accomplish.
What's one thing your students or staff have taught you?
One of the greatest gifts of being a principal is recognizing that leadership is a continuous journey of learning. My students and staff teach me something new all the time. I am constantly reminded that some of the most powerful lessons come from the very people we have the privilege of serving. One important lesson that has been reinforced is the true meaning of servant leadership: leading with humility, listening with intention and creating the conditions for others to thrive. Leadership is not about having all the answers but recognizing the incredible strengths, perspectives and experiences others bring to the table and finding ways to elevate them. Our students have taught me the importance of listening to their voices, seeing the world through their eyes and to never underestimate the power of words. The staff has shown me what can be achieved when people feel trusted, empowered and encouraged to bring their unique talents to their work. I have learned that some of my most meaningful impact comes from stepping back, listening and creating the conditions that allow others to lead and thrive. When I intentionally tap into the collective wisdom of all, we all become stronger. Being able to learn from the students and staff I serve has been one of the greatest blessings.
What's one thing you hope every student feels when they walk through your school's doors?
I often share this message with our students, staff and families: When students walk through the doors of Silver Creek Middle School, I want them to feel an undeniable sense of belonging. I want every student to know that they are seen, valued and respected. I want them to feel safe, physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually. They should feel comfortable being their authentic selves, expressing their ideas, embracing their identities, making mistakes and taking the risks that are essential to learning and growing.
Additionally, I want our students to develop a lasting belief in themselves. Middle school is such a pivotal time in a young person's life, and the experiences students have during these years can profoundly shape how they see themselves and their futures. As a principal, I have an opportunity and responsibility to help students discover their strengths, develop confidence and recognize that they can achieve more than they may have ever imagined.
My hope is that every interaction, every experience and every relationship within our building contributes to nurturing a genuine love of learning and a strong sense of self-worth.
What's an interesting or fun fact that not everyone knows about you?
Something that not everyone knows about me is that I absolutely love to bake. Baking is relaxing and brings me joy. It allows me to slow down and to be creative. I enjoy experimenting with different recipes and exploring new ideas to create a variety of baking ideas to help me unwind and recharge.
What impact do you think principals have on the greater community?
I believe the relationship between a principal and the greater community is a true partnership where we learn from, support and inspire one another. When we come together and embrace the strengths each of us brings, we create a stronger school where our students can thrive. I have learned so much from our families, students and community. Their experiences and voices have enriched my understanding of what it truly means to lead with empathy. Schools are at the heart of their communities, and when we cultivate authentic relationships with families, our PTSA, neighboring organizations and other stakeholders, we create a powerful network of support around our students. Our greatest impact comes when we recognize that we are all connected and that student success is not only a shared responsibility but also a collaborative effort that requires us to work together toward a common goal.
