MCPS Wraps Up Vibrant Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations

MCPS schools and offices wrapped up a lively month of Hispanic Heritage Month festivities last week.
East Silver Spring Elementary School’s celebration included singing, dancing, engaging family games and a high-energy Zumba class. Students and families sampled offerings from food trucks alongside cultural offerings from Shepherd’s Table, explored bulletin board displays and connected with local supports at a resource fair.
Newport Mill Middle School brought the entire community together for an event filled with performances, music, dancing, food and cultural traditions, and a twist on the traditional Spirit Week with the Hispanic Heritage Spirit Cup. The school hosted La Feria, a schoolwide, cross-curricular Hispanic Heritage learning challenge, with academic departments connecting their content to Hispanic and Latino culture, history, contributions and experiences through interactive Kahoot challenges.
District leadership and staff at MCPS Central Services marked the occasion with a keynote presentation from Dr. Elisa Gironzetti, associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Maryland, who spoke on Spanish, Culture & Identity: Our Voices, Our Classrooms, Our Belonging.
