School Closure Conversations: Round One Engagement Happening Now
Posted On October 22, 2026
MCPS is continuing its community engagement sessions on the elementary and middle school closure and consolidation study. And if you have questions, concerns or feel you don't yet have enough information to form an opinion, that's exactly why these conversations are taking place.
We know this study raises important questions for families, staff and communities. Why is MCPS considering school closures and consolidations? What does the enrollment data tell us? How will decisions be made? What could changes mean for students, school programs and neighborhoods?
These are fair and important questions. And they deserve thoughtful, fact-based answers.
Here's what we want everyone to understand: No schools have been selected for closure or consolidation. No recommendations have been made, and no outcomes have been predetermined.
A note about meeting locations: Meeting sites were selected to provide opportunities for participation across Montgomery County and reach as many families as possible. Hosting a meeting at a particular school or in a particular community does not mean that school or community is being considered for closure or consolidation. No such determinations have been made.
We also recognize that some participants want more detailed data, including information about individual schools, student demographics and how various factors will be considered. Others are attending their first meeting and are just beginning to understand the study. Both perspectives are important.
You don't need to arrive with all the answers, or even know all the questions, to participate. That's what engagement is for. We are listening, sharing information and helping our community become better informed as the process moves forward. Not every question can be answered at this early stage, but the questions being raised will help inform the work ahead.
This Is a Process, Not a Decision
The study will unfold in stages, with additional opportunities for community participation. This fall's meetings focus on understanding the reasons for the study, reviewing available information and gathering initial feedback. The next round of engagement, planned for early December, will explore the criteria and considerations that would guide potential recommendations.
Any future recommendations must go through the required public process and ultimately be considered by the Board of Education. Changes will not take place for the 2027–2028 school year, providing additional time for careful study, community engagement and planning.
There's still time …If you haven't attended a meeting, we encourage you to join one of the remaining sessions. If you've already participated, stay engaged, explore the information available and continue asking questions.
